James Cameron and the cast of Avatar give heartfelt tributes to Oscar-winning producer, Jon Landau, who passed away after a battle with cancer on July 5.
Following his passing, Cameron issued a statement to Variety remembering his longtime collaborator and friend. "His legacy is not just the films he produced, but the personal example he set — indomitable, caring, inclusive, tireless, insightful and utterly unique. He produced great films, not by wielding power but by spreading warmth and the joy of making cinema. He inspired us all to be and to bring our best, every day," Cameron said. "I have lost a dear friend, and my closest collaborator of 31 years. A part of myself has been torn away." Landau was a producer on both Avatar films and Titanic, all three of which were record-setting box office hits.

James Cameron's love of anime isn't a secret, but Princess Mononoke is arguably the most influential anime in the filmmaker's career.
In the days after his passing, cast members of Avatar have also paid tribute to the legendary producer. Zoe Saldaña, who portrays Neytiri in both Avatar films, took to Instagram to remember Landau. "Words are hard to put together right now, your passing is hitting really hard. You are leaving us too soon, my thoughts are with you and your family right now. Your wisdom and support shaped so many of us in ways we will always be grateful for. The memories we shared together will always hold a special place in my heart. Your legacy will continue to inspire us and guide us in our journey. Rest in peace, dear Jon. You will be deeply missed."
Sam Worthington, who plays Jake Sully in the Avatar films, also issued a statement paying tribute to Landau. "Jon was all heart. He made everything and everyone he touched feel they could be better. He led with humor and strength, compassion and kindness," Worthington said. The actor would make reference to a scene in the first Avatar film, further adding, "The People say all energy is borrowed and someday you have to give it back. I see you, Jon."
Robert Rodriguez Remembers Jon Landau
Though his collaboration with Cameron played a major part in his illustrious career, Landau's achievements spanned many decades. He produced Warren Beatty's Dick Tracy, as well as the classic comedy, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. He also served as a producer for Steven Soderbergh's sci-fi film, Solaris. Landau served as executive vice president of feature film for 20th Century Fox in the 90s, which is where he first met Cameron. Landau also produced 2019's Alita: Battle Angel, directed by Robert Rodriguez. Alita: Battle Angel holds the distinction of being the highest-grossing film Rodriguez has ever released.
