Frozen Waffles Versus Healthy Waffles Recipe

If you ask most children how to make a waffle, they will head right to the freezer. Open a box of unhealthy frozen waffles and pop them in the toaster. This is sad and we honestly should do more for these kids. Yes, once in awhile is okay. Matter of fact, our kids love the Vans Ancient Grains Gluten Free Waffles. They still contain some cane sugar and canola oil, so we definitely do not make them a part of our weekly menu.

However, they also know how we make real waffles — on a waffle iron. If you need to stock your freezer, double the batch. They keep frozen perfectly. Just pop them in the toaster and flip them 1-2x to toast up perfectly.

Just Make this Healthy Waffles Recipe

Thegood news is, healthy and delicious waffles DO exist! But until someone comes up with a truly healthy ready-made frozen waffle, you do have to make them yourself.

If the idea of learning how to make waffles from scratch makes you want to crawlright back into bed, don’t fret! Making waffles is one of the absolute easiest things on earth to cook.Seriously.

How To Make Healthy Waffles Recipe

Makingthis homemade healthy waffles recipe is so incredibly easy that I decided to ask my kids to make it on their own one morning. Within about 15 minutes, they had the first batch of waffles in the waffle maker.

All you need is a high speed blender and a waffle maker. For Christmas, we bought our son this Cuisinart Waffle Maker and it’s been amazing. It’s a great appliance, easy to clean the pop-out waffle griddles and even the kids can use it safely.

Swap Refined Flour for Gluten Free Whole Grain Flour

The best gluten free swap for refined flour is King Arthur’s cup-for-cup whole grain flour. Trust me, it tastes exactly the same but with no inflammatory properties.

Swap Refined Sugar for Dates

We love using dates as a natural sweetener in our foods. You literally cannot taste the difference, but the dates are just as sweet.

Use Coconut Cream Instead of Milk

I went one step further to make this healthy waffles recipe truly healthy. I swapped out the milk for some coconut cream. The cream gives the waffles a wonderful texture and savory sweet flavor.

Healthy Waffles Recipe Toppings

As for how to make wafflesoutrageously delicious? Add some fresh fruit, homemade coconut cream and real maple syrup. Yum!

We love skillet seared peaches with wild blueberries and a dollop of whipped cream made with coconut milk.

We also love using ourfresh strawberry sauce recipe. This strawberry sauce is organic with no refined sugar. It freezes beautifully too.

Add a Waffle Topping While Cooking

If you want to jazz up the healthy waffle recipe itself, you can always add one of the following ingredients after you pour the batter into the waffle iron. Note: do not stir the ingredients into the batter.

  • Thin slices of banana + a dash of cinnamon
  • Cacao nibs
  • Dairy-free chocolate chips, like Enjoy Life
  • Frozenwild blueberries, thawed and patted dry with paper towels (Note: wild blueberries are smaller thanthe more typical cultivated blueberries and their small size is ideal for waffle-making)

Notes

Coconut “Cream” is the thick, rich and non-watery part of canned coconut milk. To get the “cream” you need to refrigerate your coconut milk for 5 or 6 hours or pop it in the freezer for at least an hour. Once the coconut milk is cold, carefully remove the top with a can opener and use a spoon to scoop out the hardened coconut “cream” off the top. The “cream” is what you will be using for the waffle recipe. You can reserve the liquid water for other smoothies.

Over the years, I have foundmake-ahead breakfaststo be one of the very best ways to reduce morning household stress. This healthy waffler recipe batter is super easy to make-ahead because the batter can be made up to 3 days in advance and then stored in a mason jar in the refrigerator. If you have the batter prepared, all you have to do in the morning is heat the waffle iron and pour in the waffle batter. It takes 3-minutes.
