🌊📘 Exciting Book Launch Announcement: "Governing Oceans" 📘🌊I am thrilled to share a significant milestone in my journey towards working and looking at ocean governance. This week, parallel to the prestigious The Economist #WorldOceanSummit in Lisbon where I could exchange perceptions of multilevel and intersectoral maritime cooperation, I am delighted to announce the launch of a groundbreaking book, "Governing Oceans: Policy Development, Implementation, and Evaluation," in which I have contributed with a chapter together with my dear colleagues Carolina Ambinder and Daniele Dionisio. Edited by Catherine Jones of the School of International Relations at the University of St Andrews, this insightful publication critically evaluates the effectiveness of current ocean governance frameworks. As we confront escalating threats such as increased sea temperatures and biodiversity loss, the contributors to this book pose the critical question: what type of political space do the oceans occupy, and is it possible to create, implement, and assess an international framework for governing our oceans? Our chapter, "Multilevel Cooperation on Behalf of Ocean Governance: The Brazilian Navy Case Study," explores innovative approaches to collaborative governance, drawing upon the unique experiences and challenges faced by the Brazilian Navy. Through practical case studies and comprehensive analysis, we aim to contribute to a deeper understanding of how multilevel cooperation can enhance the management of our marine resources. It brings me great pleasure to highlight that "Governing Oceans" is the culmination of two years of dedicated work, involving three different workshops held in St Andrews, The Hague, and London. These workshops served as platforms for rigorous discussions, exchange of ideas, and collaboration among experts from various disciplines, laying the foundation for the insights presented in this book."Governing Oceans" adopts a unique interdisciplinary approach, bringing together experts from political sciences, heritage management, marine policy, and coastal ecosystems. By identifying current challenges, sharing best practices, and developing pragmatic solutions, this book serves as a blueprint for improving the management of our seas.Whether you are a student, academic, researcher, governance practitioner, or professional working in the marine sector, I believe you will find this book to be an insightful and invaluable resource.https://lnkd.in/dbXrM43U#GoverningOceans #OceanGovernance #Sustainability #WorldOceanSummit #Lisbon #BookLaunch #BrazilianNavy #StAndrews #TheHague #London

We need to protect much more #marinelife than we currently do to reach #30by30. #biodiversity needs protecting where it flourishes. The MPA Europe Project is mapping an optimal representative and #climateresilient network of marine #protectedareas across European seas, based on environmental, #species and #habitats data, to help national #maritime #spatialplanning authorities and agencies responsible for protecting marine #biodiversity optimise conservation effectiveness in these busy seaspaces.During the summer we hosted a series of online workshops with national and regional stakeholders from the #atlantic, #balticsea, #blacksea and #mediterraneansea to present the project’s scope, goals, and activities. We welcomed representatives from national planning authorities and institutes, regional seas conventions and councils, NGOs, protected area management networks and sister projects and initiatives. We were delighted to receive a great range of initial questions, which encompassed the following aspects:🌊 - Project scope and outcomes🦐 - #data sources and resolution🐳 - Data access🐙 - #prioritisation scenarios🐚 - The #bluecarbon scoring system and its purpose🐠 - Changing ranges of species under #climatechange 🦑 - Interaction of results with existingprotected areas, other effective area-based conservation measures and #blueeconomy activities🦀 - Stakeholder involvement, and🐟 - Approach to case studies.Today we publish our full FAQs across all seabasins for the benefit of all stakeholders and interested parties 👇 https://lnkd.in/eG8jMRPuBig thanks to all attendees for generously sharing your time and your thoughts.#sdg13 #sdg14 #sdg17 #ocean action is #climateaction
