Make This Game Day Dessert

Ingredients

  • 1 package (8oz) cream cheese, softened
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons chocolate syrup
  • 20 chocolate cookie sandwiches, crushed
  • 1 cup mini semi-sweet chocolate morsels

Directions

  • In a large mixing bowl, add cream cheese and butter and beat until fluffy and combined, about 3 minutes. Add powdered sugar and beat until fully incorporated. Reserve 3 tablespoons in a small zip-top bag; seal and set aside.
  • Add chocolate syrup and crushed sandwich cookies and beat until combined.
  • Line a large bowl with plastic wrap. Place the cream cheese mixture into prepared bowl and fold the plastic over the cheese. Refrigerate for 1 hour.
  • Unwrap plastic from the top of the cheese mixture (leaving it underneath) and turn out on a plate or small serving platter (wrapped side up). Shape into a football, then remove the plastic and press chocolate chips onto the tops and sides until completely covered.
  • Using your reserved bag of cream cheese mixture, snip off the corner and pipe “football laces” on the top of your cheese ball. Serve immediately or cover and refrigerate.

Not in the mood for sweet? No prob! Make this savory version instead.

Color Coordinate This Football-Themed Dessert

The best part about this board is using candies to match your team’s colors. I made this board before last year for the Rams and Bengals (hence the colors!), but it’s super easy to customize. This year for The Chiefs you can use red and black and for The 49ers, you can use red and yellow. If you’re having trouble finding yellow candies, you could go for gold-wrapped chocolates (like Hershey’s nuggets). I used gummies and licorice for the bold bright colors, but feel free to tailor it to your preferences–not everyone is a fan of gummy candy!

When I’m making candy boards, I often shop at Sockerbit, World Market, and Dylan’s for a variety of candies in different colors.

Carbs

  • Pretzels
  • Vanilla Wafer Cookies

Sweets

  • Chocolate Cheese Football (recipe above!)
  • Assorted black candies (Licorice Wheels are my go-to)
  • Assorted red candies
  • Assorted yellow or gold candies

Put It All Together

  • Place chocolate cheese football in the center of a small serving platter. Fan the pretzels around the entire football, then fan the wafers around the pretzel layer.
  • Place the small platter onto a larger one (this makes cleaning up easier!).
  • In a medium bowl, mix the Bengal-themed candy to evenly distribute. Add to one side of the large platter. In the same medium bowl, mix the Rams-themed candy to evenly distribute. Add to the opposite side of the board.
  • Enjoy, and may the best team win!

Game Day Dessert Pairings

When it comes to sweets, I personally like to pair them with wine. For this board, the creaminess of the sweet cheese football would be best paired with a dry, crisp white wine to help cut through the richness and temper the sweetness.

That said, you could also pair it with a fruit-forward co*cktail or seltzer! If you go for berry-flavored candies, go for berry-flavored drinks. Citrus candies? Go citrus! You get the drift. No matter what, stick to the clear liquors that don’t have a robust flavor of their own, like vodka!
