Helping Labor Intensive Contractors Improve Operational Performance

It’s Tuesday morning and there are thousands of foremen just getting to the job site. How many of them have prepared and communicated a plan for next week’s work, along with a detailed list of what manpower, tools, equipment, materials, consumables and information they will need to complete the planned work. Most are probably thinking about getting through today and calling the shop for last minute things that they should have been thinking about last week. The best foremen prepare and communicate a short-interval plan (not schedule), a week before the work is to be performed. All of the last-minute calls to the shop or daily trips to the supply house are symptoms of poor planning at the field level and destroy productivity. Planning is a skill and process that has to be taught. It’s not instinctive to most people who grew up in the trades. Allowing your field managers to not document and communicate a good plan and list of needs weekly, for future work, is a leadership failure.

What the market will bear.So apparently the Pipe Trades Local for El Paso has jettisoned its “HVAC Mechanic Journeyman El Paso” wage in favor for the “Industrial Construction Pipefitter Journeyman New Mexico” wage. There was previously 3 PTU Service employers in ELP, 2 of them which are National Signers. Now, there’s only 2 employers, as the Albuquerque company that had 2 Mechanics, locally, has exited the ELP market.Brand T & the ALC Dealer, who are both non-union, have kick-butt shops, and they neck-in-neck compete against both The Big Blue J & The Big Red H.Will there ever be another company in ELP, such as the former Thermal Control Inc.?So what will the market bear?!

It's truly alarming to see the staggering numbers highlighting the shortage of skilled workers in essential trades such as electricians and welders. The looming retirement of a significant portion of the workforce only exacerbates this pressing issue. The decline in interest and prestige associated with trade professions is indeed concerning. It's disheartening to witness the devaluation of these critical roles, especially considering the vital role they play in building and maintaining our infrastructure. The absence of shop classes in schools has undoubtedly contributed to this societal perception, as it limited exposure to potential career paths in the trades. We must acknowledge that college isn't the sole path to success and that skilled trades offer rewarding and lucrative opportunities for those with a knack for working with their hands. To address this crisis and elevate the status of skilled trades, concerted efforts are needed to reshape public perception and promote the value of these professions. Redirecting funds towards initiatives aimed at highlighting the importance and appeal of trades is a step in the right direction.Events like the Nest IFM summit, where passionate advocates like yourself come together to discuss these issues, serve as valuable platforms for spreading awareness and initiating change. Your dedication to speaking out and advocating for the trades is commendable, and your commitment to making a difference is inspiring.Count me in, along with countless others, to support your efforts in revitalizing the skilled trades and ensuring a robust workforce for the future. Together, let's work towards bridging the gap and cultivating a renewed appreciation for the invaluable contributions of tradespeople in building a stronger, more prosperous society.

When I wrote the first pitch deck for Workbnb I was told not to include too many numbers and statistics. “Investors don’t care to remember too many numbers. They just want a taste to intice them to set a next meeting.” To say the least, I was not complicit. I over pitched from day one because the pain for #bluecollar workers had been completely overlooked. From my first “story” video submission to Tré Baker, all the way up to my demo day pitch for Build in Tulsa Techstars Accelerator, I have maintained a sense of urgency to improve “employee morale.”The story is in the numbers! I want to applaud Andrew Brown for his delivery of the numbers, and I’m eager to include these numbers in my next investor updates so we can deploy capital faster into purpose-driven technology. #contech We believe traveling workers matter!Workbnbapp.comThe Workbnb, Inc | Techstars '22 movement continues! #workbnb #workforcehousing #housing #proptech #workforcetravel #traveltech #workforcesolutions #essentialworkers #workforcedevelopment #skilledtrade #skilledworkers #electricalcontractors #electrician #electricians #IBEW #lineman #journeyman #contractors #construction #constructionprojects #constructionindustry #subcontractors #constructionworkers #workforce #employeemorale #mentalhealth #employeementalhealth #infrastructure #infrastructurejobs #infrastructuredecade #iija #techstars #vegastech #techsolutions
